Privacy

We use your firm's data only to provide the service — reading and extracting your documents, drafting your commitments, and running your matters. We do not use it to train AI models, we do not use it for any other purpose, and we do not share it beyond the service providers named in this policy.

When a signed-in user makes an edit in Mesne — for example, a change to a matter, a firm setting, or an extracted field — we record which account made it, which firm and matter it was in, what kind of change it was and which fields it touched when the change is to particular fields, and when. We do this for security and accountability. We do not record the content of the change, apart from a few settings that hold no client information, such as a matter's status or a firm's default settings. These records are kept with your firm's account records.

When a commitment is downloaded or exported, Mesne keeps a copy of that version, with which account produced it and when.

A firm can rewrite a line of a commitment. Mesne then keeps the wording the firm wrote, its reason, and which account wrote it and when, with that matter's records — not in the activity records above. The commitment's Sources & Provenance page notes that the wording was written by the firm.

To run Mesne we use a small number of third-party providers. Each receives only the data it needs to do its job.

Anthropic (AI extraction and drafting). Mesne uses Anthropic's AI models to read your uploaded documents, extract information from them, and draft commitments. This means the contents of the documents you upload — including personal information they contain about your clients — are transmitted to Anthropic to perform that work. Anthropic's commercial terms state that it does not train its models on this content and deletes it within 30 days by default.

Clerk (sign-in and accounts). Handles authentication and stores your account information, such as your email address.

DigitalOcean (hosting). Where the Mesne application and your data are hosted.

Public county and records systems. When you create a matter, Mesne queries public records (such as the register of deeds and county tax assessor) using the property address, to validate and retrieve public information.

We do not sell your data.

If you contact us through our website, we keep your name, email, firm, message, and your IP address and browser type, to reply to you and to prevent abuse. We do not sell it.
